Wooden Wheel
You will need a 2 - 3 inch wooden wheel (for the whorl) and a dowel (for the spindle) that fits into it very tightly. Cut the dowel to about a nine inch length. Put the dowel into the wheel about an inch or so and you now have a drop spindle. You can add a small cup hook at the top or just use a half hitch to hold the yarn on.
Medieval Whorl
While this isn't exactly making a new drop spindle, it was an interesting experiment. I bought a medieval stone whorl and made a spindle pointed on both ends from a piece of dowel. It is probably the best spinning drop spindle I own.
